Alan Davies

Practice Advisor | RSAAW

A member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC), and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. In the past I have served on the AIBC Communications and Tariff of Fees Committees, the National Sustainable Building Design Advisor Program in Seattle, and recently the Vancouver Urban Design Panel. Currently I am an outside consultant to the City of Vancouver on a Council directed initiative to identify policy and procedural impediments to planning approvals. In addition, since 2000, I have volunteered as a mentor for the SALA and the AIBC Internship in Architecture Program. I have over 35 years of experience on mixed-use residential developments and heritage restoration projects in London, England and Vancouver. As an Associate at Hawkins\Brown in London, I was responsible for community, interior, and historic restoration projects. I was also a Principal at Acton Ostry Architects (AOA), where I worked for 18 years. Projects include Project Lead on the Water Street Revitalization redevelopment of five historic buildings in the Gastown Historic District. The redevelopment involved a collaborative planning process with the City of Vancouver Planning, and Heritage Departments to determine a sympathetic form and careful distribution of density. The adaptive re-use and rehabilitation of the buildings was carefully designed to achieve an increase in the density of retail, office, and residential uses in a distinguishable built form. The redevelopment was awarded a Lieutenant Governor of BC Medal in Architecture in 2010. I am currently a consultant for the City of Vancouver, advising on the Planning Improvement Project and preparing strategies to streamline the application process. In 2022 I became Practice Advisor and mentor at the Rafael Santa Ana Architectural Workshop. Outside of the profession, I continue to play in an alternative band, formed at UBC in 1980. My wife and I have two daughters who live and work in London.
