Intermediate Designer | Perkins & Will
Abubaker Bajaman is an intermediate designer at Perkins & Will's Vancouver studio. He holds an undergraduate degree in Architectural Science from BCIT and a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto (2020). During his undergraduate studies, he engaged in a six-month exchange semester in Germany, collaborating with HAWK students to design and construct a pavilion. His graduate thesis consisted of two parts: the first involved studying micro sites in Beirut and proposing a design intervention for one of them, while the second focused on a theoretical framework for a futuristic elevated city in Manhattan, envisioning the evolution of air rights policies. Abu has gained work experience through internships and post-graduation projects, encompassing various scales and areas of expertise both locally and internationally. Some notable projects he was involved in include the Cairo Iconic Tower, SFU Stadium, and the Hudsons Bay Redevelopment, some of which received multiple awards. Currently, Abu holds a team lead role, working on the design and documentation of three large retail podiums for a mixed-use development in Burnaby. His passion for design and visualization is evident through his active participation in design competitions with collaborators. Abu's achievements include being a global finalist and North American winner for the Velux International Award, where he presented the team's proposal at the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam. Additionally, his team's proposal for the Seoul Biennale was shortlisted and realized. Abu also collaborates on personal projects, such as a schematic design proposal for the adaptive reuse of a heritage site in Leipzig. Currently, Abu is registered as an intern architect with the AIBC, logging his hours for licensure.
